A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO PADEL BALL

The official name for the sport is padel (pronounced 'pa-delle'), and the pressurized rubber balls used in the game are called padel balls. Padel is a type of racquet sport that originated in Mexico.

Padel is different from traditional racquet sports games like tennis and squash games, as it's only played in doubles and on a smaller, enclosed court. This makes the game more fast-paced and encourages players to use creative shots to outplay their opponents.

Padel is also different from Paddle Ball. It is one of the most common mistakes in America referring to the game of Padel is misspelling it or describing it as paddle ball.  We talk a little more about the differences below in the frequently asked questions section of the beginners guide.

GROWING POPULARITY IN THE USA AND CANADA

USA

As the USPAs official governing body for Padel, certified by the International Padel Federation (FIP), the world governing body, America is finally catching up to its global counterparts in recognizing this fast-growing sport.  The USPA hosted its' first ever Padel World Championships in the USA in 2022.

With over 22 million players worldwide across 93 countries and counting, it's no surprise the USA will doubled its number of courts in 2022!  Players often describe the sport as addictive and energizing, so undoubtedly, padel is becoming a mainstream pastime in the USA.

CANADA

Padel was introduced to Canada in Calgary, Alberta in 1992.  In 1993, Padel Canada became a Registered Canadian Amateur Athletic Association.   Currently padel is being played predominately in Calgary, Alberta, Lake Country, British Columbia and Montreal, Quebec.  But the sport is catching on like wild fire for young and old alike.

WHAT ARE THE RULES OF PADEL?

The rules of padel are very similar to that of paddle tennis. One key difference to other 'paddle sports', is Padel is a doubles game ONLY. The aim is for each player to hit the ball over the net into their opponent's court, forcing the opponent to play it back. If the opponent makes a mistake or is unable to return the ball before it bounces twice on the ground, you get a point. The first team to score 11 points wins the game.

However, there are some key differences when it comes to the rules of padel. For example, the court itself is smaller, about one third of the size of a tennis court, and it's enclosed on all sides by walls or fences. In addition, balls must be hit with a racket that has been specifically designed for use on a padel court.

Otherwise, the rules are similar to tennis, although serving is under-hand and the walls are used as part of the game.

Did you know that in padel, players can hit the ball back into the court from outside its boundaries? It's mind-blowing stuff!

Check out some videos of people playing this remarkable technique and give it a go yourself. It's growing fast because it can be an addictive sport. It's fun and you get great exercise playing.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN SIZE BETWEEN A TENNIS COURT AND A PADEL COURT?

The main difference in size between a conventional tennis court and a padel court is that the padel court is much smaller.

A standard padel court measures 10m x 20m, which is roughly a slightly smaller, about a third of the size of a traditional tennis court. This means that players have to be more precise when hitting their shots as space for error is limited.  The court's surface can be made from a synthetic material or artificial grass.

The other obvious difference is the walls around a padel court, which are actually legal to bounce off of and use in play.
